Crystal Marshall’s Afro-Caribbean Artistry Radiates with Cultural Fusion

Crystal Marshall, an Afro-Caribbean visual artist based in Atlanta, Georgia, creates art that moves the spirit with a palpable heart and vivid colors. Backed by 15 years of artistic practice, Marshall blends cultural fusion, surrealism, and a profound exploration of societal norms. Born in Long Island, New York, her journey began at the Edna Manley School of the Visual and Performing Arts, followed by the Maryland Institute College of Art. Each experience adds a new layer to the brushstrokes of her divine creations.

Marshall’s distinctive approach stems from her unique upbringing, straddling two worlds — born in the United States but raised in Jamaica. Her narrative-based, surreal, and figurative art draws inspiration from her experiences. She reflects on the commonalities between often contrasting ideals such as spirituality and science, fusing them to construct imaginative atmospheres and fantasy worlds that enchant and entice. Marshall’s return to the U.S. triggered a culture shock, prompting reflections on identity, societal states, and technological influences that impacted her unique art style.

Works such as “The Last Trumpet” (2023) picture a woman with white-colored eyes and no pupils surrounded by flowing, almost circular clouds to create movement. Ready to sound her horned trumpet, the two plumes adorning the subject’s head are reminiscent of an angel. The work’s realism is seen painted on archival paper in oil, with the blue and white hues swelling together with highlights of crimson. Measuring 24 x 36, the painting’s size highlights Marshall’s use of smooth brushstrokes, marking a departure from her use of texture in the past.

Rooted in the complexities of the contemporary African diaspora, Marshall’s paintings evoke a sense of isolation. Solo exhibits, including one at the Chrysler Museum’s Perry Glass Studio and one at the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in South Korea, further establish her global footprint.

Her work has been auctioned at Greenhouse Auctions, with proceeds donated to charity. Additionally, she has been featured in two editions of New American Paintings and received full scholarships for a virtual residency at Oxbow and to attend Savannah College of Art and Design.
