Probably the dream of most entrepreneurs is building a company that they can scale. The internet is full of promises of financial freedom, the ability to travel and live the ‘laptop style.’ and while all of these things are possible, many do not realize the work and commitment that it takes to build a company like that. Drew Blumenthal is not only a successful entrepreneur, but just five years after quitting his job, the 29 year old CEO runs a company that is on the verge of breaking seven figures and allows him to live a life of freedom. Here are some of the tips that he gives if you are looking to build a life of freedom.

Find Your Interest

Digital Marketing is almost a trillion dollar industry. And while that is a lot of money, it isn’t what attracted Drew to the industry. Rather, it was his passion for the internet and computers. “I always found the computer and the internet fascinating. Being able to connect and make money from anyone from anywhere [is fascinating]” That interest in computers and the internet led him to pursue a career in digital marketing. After working for several large agencies for almost four years, he remembered another of his interests. Entrepreneurship. “Since I was a kid running a lemonade stand… I have always been fueled by doing business.” So just a few years removed from completing his degree at West Chester University, he quit his job and started his marketing agency, Digital Drew.

Business Sucks, Stay Committed

Entrepreneurship has definitely been romanticized in our culture today. Images of Lamborghinis, supermodels and a life of endless luxury seem to fill our social media, but in reality, that is a very small portion of entrepreneurship. In fact, a study shows that over twenty percent of businesses fail in the first year. That number rises to over fifty percent by year five. Although issues such as running out of capital, or market saturation can play a large role, Drew believes that commitment

is the key to overcoming these hurdles. “I started Digital Drew with one single client. Now, four years later, I have over fifty, but it took waking up at 4am, constantly putting out fires and overcoming struggles to get here.”

Burnout Is Real, Take Time Off

The idea of running a business is often portrayed as sitting back, giving orders, and sipping margaritas on the beach while cash just keeps pouring in your bank account. Again, that sounds great, but that isn’t the case — at least not for most entrepreneurs. In fact, the reality is that success often comes at the cost of sleepless nights, non-stop attention to details, and sacrificing time with friends and family — just look at Elon Musk. Although it isn’t always possible to take a vacation, Drew believes that taking time off is key to continued success. “Whether it’s eating a snack, taking a quick walk or watching a youtube video, you need to find ways to rest.”

Remember, as an entrepreneur, you are often your greatest asset. The least you can do is give yourself the rest you need to keep going strong.

Enjoy The Fruits of Your Labor

Alright, here is the one we were all waiting for. Afterall, isn’t the point of being an entrepreneur to live life on your own terms? Unlike Gary Vaynerchuk, Drew enjoys the finer things of life. “I enjoy buying luxury items like Burberry, Louis Vuitton, and others. My most recent purchase was my first Rolex.” The key here is to enjoy the fruits of your labor in an affordable way. Drew’s business is earning him nearly $1,000,000 a year. He can certainly afford to drop some cash on a nice watch. I think it was Jay-Z who said, “if you can’t afford to buy it twice, you can’t afford it.”

Drew Blumenthal is the founder of Digital Drew. By focusing on helping his clients build their online brand and turn online traffic into business leads, he has built an agency that serves clients all over the globe.
